Located in William C. Haggard City ParkWELCOME TO KADE’S PLAYGROUND
Kade’s Playground is a volcano themed playground, designed to be universally accessible (above ADA standards) to ensure everyone can play together.
Why a volcano?
In 79 AD, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. As Herculaneum was being excavated during the 18th century, the architecture and culture of ancient Herculaneum were revealed. Historians suggest that Moses Austin, the founder of Herculaneum, Missouri, chose the name Herculaneum for his new town because the limestone strata along the Mississippi River was so eroded that they resembled seats in the amphitheater of the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum. In October 2012, the City of Herculaneum announced the playground would be named in honor of Kade Bauman.
Who is Kade?
One of the greatest joys of childhood is playing at a playground with your friends. Kade had to use a wheelchair due to multiple medical conditions, and could not use any of the playgrounds in Jefferson County. His parents made an effort to get an accessible swing installed in an existing playground, but before they succeeded, Kade passed away at the age of 3.
Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved with Kade’s Playground, Herculaneum has built a playground with accessibility as a key element. Now people with and without disabilities will be able to play, side by side.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Kade’s Playground.
