Herculaneum firefighter Jim Evans was awarded the American Legion Silver Star of Valor (along with Assistant Chief Steve Siracusa of Crystal City Fire Department) for their heroism as they successfully removed a gasoline tanker truck from a raging fire at the Crystal Tire Company. Two other Herculaneum firefighters were injured in the blaze and transported to Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

One tree is dedicated for each branch of the Armed Forces and a sixth tree is dedicated in memory of the Herculaneum residents who were killed in action during World War II and the Vietnam War (April 24).
