Tree Limb Collection

Tree Limb Collection Program

The City of Herculaneum is committed to working for a cleaner environment. The tree limb collection program will help keep Herculaneum green through the elimination of the need to burn the tree limbs, keeping our air cleaner and reducing the risk of fires.

  1. Eligibility:

    • Tree limb collection is exclusive to residential customers.
    • Only occupied residential accounts serviced by the city are eligible.
    • Vacant lots or unoccupied residential houses are not eligible.
  2. Collection Criteria:

    • Tree limbs will be collected from the property where they fall.
    • Collection is limited to tree limbs resulting from routine property maintenance.
      • Tree limbs from tree clearing, lot clearing, or other construction activities will not be collected.
      • Tree limbs cut by commercial services (e.g., professional tree trimmers, landscapers) will not be collected.
  3. Collection Schedule:

    • Tree limbs will be collected on the first non-holiday Monday of each month, weather permitting.
    • If Monday is a holiday, collection will occur on the following Monday.
    • Residents must notify City Hall with their name and address before 4:30 p.m. on the Friday prior to collection day.
  4. Placement Guidelines:

    • Tree limbs must be placed on the street right-of-way by 7:00 a.m.
    • Place limbs at the curb (3′-6′ from the street) with cut ends facing the same direction.
    • Avoid blocking fire hydrants, water meters, mailboxes, fences, etc.
    • Late or improperly placed limbs will be collected on the next scheduled date; no returns for late or improper placement.
  5. Size and Bundling Requirements:

    • Tree limbs should not exceed eight (8) inches in diameter or eight (8) feet in length.
    • Limbs less than three (3) feet in length and less than half (1/2) inch in diameter should be placed in brown paper bags for yard waste collection.
    • Bundle small limbs with biodegradable natural fiber cord (e.g., cotton, linen, twine); wire, plastic, or nylon cord will not be collected.
  6. Limitations:

    • The service is strictly for the removal of tree limbs; other materials like stumps, root balls, vines, etc., will not be collected.
    • Pine/fir trees with branches and needles may be placed at the curb, but loose pine/fir needles will not be collected.
  7. Non-Compliance:

    • Materials not meeting the guidelines will be left at the curb.
  8. Storm Damage Collection:

    • In addition to monthly collection, the city will provide curbside collection for storm-related tree limb damage after severe storm events, determined at the discretion of the Public Works Supervisor.
