The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is a designated bicycle and pedestrian trail that traverses the shores of the Mississippi River in the United States.
The trail goes from the headwaters at Lake Itasca in Minnesota to near the mouth of the river in Venice, LA. Much of the trail follows roadways used by motor vehicles although some of the route is on multi-use trails.
Herculaneum is located on the MRT and features two viewing areas of the river.
Head south on Highway 231 (Telegraph Road) for about 1.3 miles.
As you approach Jefferson Barracks County Park, Highway 231 transitions into Kingston. Continue for roughly 2.0 miles.
Kingston then reverts to Telegraph Road/Highway 231. Follow this road for approximately 8 miles until you reach the Jefferson County line, totaling about 11 miles from the start.
Proceed southwest on Highway 231 for about 2.2 miles until you reach the junction with State Highways 61-67.
Make a left turn onto Highway 61-67 (Jeffco Boulevard) and drive south for around 10.2 miles straight into Herculaneum (note that Highway 61-67 becomes Commercial Boulevard in Pevely and Herculaneum).
Turn left onto Joachim Avenue and go for about 0.2 miles.
Take another left onto North Main Street and continue for roughly 0.2 miles until you reach Dunklin Drive.
Turn left onto Dunklin Drive and proceed for about 0.4 miles to reach the Governor Daniel Dunklin Grave Site, which offers a scenic view of the Mississippi River.
