The City of Herculaneum remains under a citywide boil order as officials and Public Works continue to ensure the water system is fully safe following the recent water main break.

What Happened

Earlier this week, a significant water line break caused low pressure across the city’s water system. As a precaution, a boil order was issued for all residents. This is a standard public health measure taken when low or no pressure occurs, as contaminants can potentially enter the system.

Repair Progress

The leak was successfully isolated and repaired, and the city’s water system — including the water tower — has been repressurized. Residents may have noticed some sputtering, cloudy, or discolored water when service returned; this is normal as air clears from the lines.

What Residents Should Do Now

While water is flowing again, it is not yet safe for consumption until state-required testing confirms its safety. Until further notice, residents should:

  • Boil all water for at least 3 minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing dishes.

  • Avoid using automatic ice makers or drink dispensers connected to tap water unless the water has been boiled first.

  • Bathing and handwashing are generally safe, but avoid swallowing the water.

The boil order will remain in effect until the City receives two consecutive clean lab results for E. coli and total coliform bacteria. Testing and verification by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Jefferson County Health Department typically take several days.

Bottled Water Distribution

To support residents during this period, bottled water is available at the Herculaneum Fire Department.
The City has secured additional cases to meet demand, with help from Lowe’s, Spectrum, and Buchheit, who have generously donated and delivered water supplies.
Please take only what you need to ensure there is enough for everyone.

Community Appreciation

The City of Herculaneum extends sincere gratitude to:

  • The Public Works team, for their tireless overnight efforts to locate and repair the water main break.

  • All city staff, who have supported communication, logistics, and water distribution.

  • Our local businesses and residents, whose cooperation and generosity continue to show the strength of our community.

Stay Informed

Updates will continue to be shared on the City’s official website and social media channels as test results are received. We appreciate everyone’s continued patience and understanding as we work to restore full, safe water service to all residents.
